{"id":9,"date":"2004-07-08T03:58:16","date_gmt":"2004-07-08T03:58:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lachy.id.au\/log\/2004\/07\/exploring-safaris-html-tag-soup-extensions"},"modified":"2006-04-30T23:55:22","modified_gmt":"2006-04-30T23:55:22","slug":"exploring-safaris-html-tag-soup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lachy.id.au\/log\/2004\/07\/exploring-safaris-html-tag-soup","title":{"rendered":"Exploring Safari&#8217;s HTML Tag-Soup Extensions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Like everyone one else, I thought the days of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/windows\/ie\/default.mspx\">browser<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/channels.netscape.com\/ns\/browsers\/default.jsp\">vendors<\/a> adding proprietary extension to <abbr title=\"HyperText Markup Language\">HTML<\/abbr> was over.  Sadly, I was wrong: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/safari\/\">Safari<\/a> has decided to <a href=\"http:\/\/weblogs.mozillazine.org\/hyatt\/archives\/2004_07.html#005913\">join in<\/a> on the game.  They&#8217;ve now introduced a <code>&lt;canvas&gt;<\/code> element as well as a new <code>composite<\/code> attribute for the <code>&lt;img&gt;<\/code> element.  Not only are both of these presentational attributes, they&#8217;ve been added to HTML, while still using the HTML 4.01 doctypes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Of course, Dave Hyatt attempted to <a href=\"http:\/\/weblogs.mozillazine.org\/hyatt\/archives\/2004_07.html#005913\">explain with a follow up post<\/a> the reasons for making these extension to <abbr title=\"HyperText Markup Language\">HTML<\/abbr> and not using <abbr title=\"Extensible HyperText Markup Language\">XHTML<\/abbr> and adding them with a different namespace.  Also, as he points out, others suggested that they should have used <abbr title=\"Scaleable Vector Graphics\">SVG<\/abbr>, yet fails to explain with any valid reason, except by saying that it would have basically been too difficult and time consuming.  <abbr title=\"In My Opinion\">IMO<\/abbr>, that&#8217;s just plain lazy, and I would have expected better from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\">Apple<\/a>.  Sorry Dave, I have to agree with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meyerweb.com\/eric\/thoughts\/2004\/07\/07\/wrapped-in-canvas\/\">Eric Meyer<\/a> on this one \u2014 this is big a mistake, and I think the Safari team should <em>hang their heads in shame!<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Like everyone one else, I thought the days of browser vendors adding proprietary extension to HTML was over.
