{"id":62,"date":"2005-02-24T08:16:54","date_gmt":"2005-02-24T08:16:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lachy.id.au\/log\/2005\/02\/stopping-new-popup"},"modified":"2006-04-30T23:46:45","modified_gmt":"2006-04-30T23:46:45","slug":"stopping-new-popup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lachy.id.au\/log\/2005\/02\/stopping-new-popup","title":{"rendered":"Stopping the New Popup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For those of you who haven&#8217;t heard there&#8217;s a new way for advertisers to bypass the Mozilla\/Firefox popup blocker, as discussed in <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=281472\">bug 281472<\/a> and in Slashdot&#8217;s article: <a href=\"http:\/\/slashdot.org\/article.pl?sid=05\/02\/21\/0143223\">The Return of the Pop-Up Ad<\/a>.  Well, there is now a work around for this problem, as I wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=281472#c8\">bug 281472 comment 8<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>Go to <kbd>about:config<\/kbd> (type it in the address bar)<\/li>\r\n<li>Set <strong>browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs<\/strong> to <strong>true<\/strong> (type &#8220;single&#8221; in the Filter to find it quickly)<\/li>\r\n<li>Go to <strong>Tools > Options\u2026<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<li>Select the <strong>Advanced<\/strong> tab<\/li>\r\n<li>Check <strong>Force links that open new windows to open in:<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<li>Check <strong>the same tab\/window as the link<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n<p>That will also stop all those annoying target attributes spawning unwanted new windows.  However, some people may not want to block the target attribute completely, but everyone hates those pop-unders.  To control whether or not a popup can actually pop under or not, that&#8217;s very simple too.  (There&#8217;s no need to change the setting in about:config above before making this change)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>Go to <strong>Tools > Options\u2026<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<li>Select the <strong>Web Features<\/strong> tab<\/li>\r\n<li>Select the <strong>Advanced\u2026<\/strong> button<\/li>\r\n<li>Uncheck <strong>Raise or lower windows<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<li>I recommend you uncheck all of them, except for change images, but that&#8217;s your choice.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"For those of you who haven&#8217;t heard there&#8217;s a new way for advertisers to bypass the Mozilla\/Firefox popup blocker, as discussed in bug 281472 and in Slashdot&#8217;s article: The Return of the Pop-Up Ad.
